QTH Reflector - Email Subscription Commands

This page describes commands you can email to the QTH reflector software (Mailman) to get information about, and control, your subscription to the QTH NPARC reflector. Note that it's probably easier to use the Reflector's Information web site, rather than email, to make changes in your reflector subscription. Also note that not all available subscription changes can be made by sending an email. Some can only be made at the web site. For example, you can't request a reminder of your password by email.

Email Commands:

bulletHelp
bulletCurrent Settings
bulletSubscribe
bulletUnsubscribe
bulletHold Mail
bulletDigest Mode
bulletPasswords
bulletWho's Subscribed
bulletOther Commands

All of the email subscription commands to the left use an email message format as follows:

  TO:  nparc-request@mailman.qth.net

  FROM:     YourEmail Address

  SUBJECT:     Insert command(s) here

  BODY:           <--- leave blank

Actually, a command can be put either in the subject line or in the body of the message. Multiple commands can be sent in one e-mail, provided each occurs on a separate line of the text body

1. Get a List of Email Commands

To receive an email listing all the email commands (as described on this page), send this command:

help

2. List of Current Settings

To receive an email listing all your current email subscription settings, send this command:

options

3. Subscribe

To join the reflector use this command:

subscribe mypassword digest address=email address

mypassword is replaced with a password of your choice and must be included in your request. Pick a password not used by any of your other important web or financial accounts.

digest is an optional parameter to select digest mode. Leave it out if you don't want the digest mode.

address=email address is an optional parameter that you can use to subscribe an address other than the address from which you will send this request. Replace the email address portion of the command with the email address you want to register.  Leave out this parameter if you are subscribing from the email address you want registered.

4. Unsubscribe

To leave the reflector permanently (or at least for now from this address):

unsubscribe mypassword myaddress

mypassword  should be replaced with your current password

myaddress is an optional parameter that you can use if you sending the email from an email address different from the one you want to unsubscribe. Leave out this parameter if you are sending the email  from the email address to be unsubscribed.

5. Vacation Mode

If you want to temporarily discontinue receiving messages without unsubscribing, use this command:

set nomail on mypassword      but replace mypassword  with your current password.

You can leave vacation mode and resume getting messages with:

set nomail off mypassword     but replace mypassword  with your current password.

6. Digest Mode

The QTH NPARC reflector normally sends you a copy of each posting as soon as it submitted by another subscriber. Another option is digest mode. In digest mode you will receive at most one reflector email per day, an accumulation (or digest) of yesterday's reflector postings. If there are no previous day postings, there will be no digest. Digest mode cuts down on the number of messages received, but it results in at least a one-day delay in the receipt of those messages.

You may subscribe to either the regular reflector or the digest, but not both. Regardless of the mode you pick, you will be able to submit messages to the reflector.

To receive posting in a daily digest:

set digest on mypassword      but replace mypassword  with your current password.

To turn digest mode off:

set digest off mypassword      but replace mypassword  with your current password.

7. Passwords

a. To change your password:

password old new  but replace old with your current password and replace new with the new password you would like

b. If you've forgotten your password, you can not request a reminder by email. Instead you can either visit the NPARC Reflector web site; or contact the reflector manager to ask for help; or find an old email with the password on it. (You did save one didn't you!)

c. By default you will be sent monthly email reminders. There is an option to turn off monthly reminders, but you can't select that option using an email command. You can either visit the NPARC Reflector web site or you can contact the reflector manager to ask for help.

8. Who's Subscribed

To see the email addresses (not real names) of everyone who is subscribed to the reflector (and hasn't elected to hide their email address), send this command:

who

9.Other Commands

a. Hide

Normally set to off. When turned on, your email address is concealed on the subscribers' web page so that other subscribers can't see that you are subscribed. (Non-subscribers can't see the page at all.) To hide your address:

set hide on mypassword

To turn hide off:

set hide off mypassword

b. Acknowledgements

Normally off. When turned on, you get an email acknowledging that your messages was sent to the list. To get acknowledgements from the reflector:

set ack on mypassword

To turn acknowledgements off:

set ack off mypassword

c. Don't Send My Posts to Me

Usually off, meaning you will get a reflected copy of your own postings. Turn it on to suppress getting a copy:

set notmetoo on mypassword

This does not affect the contents of digests, so if you receive postings in digests, you will always get   copies of your messages in the digest.

To turn it off and resume getting copies of your postings:

set notmetoo off mypassword

d. Digest Type

For Digest subscribers only: Digests are usually sent in MIME format, which can be read by most email reader programs. If you have any problems reading a digest in MIME format, select plain text:

set plain on mypassword

To turn it off plain text off and return to MIME digest format:

set plain off mypassword
